Close(d) Up

Close Up, 2020 Kevin Gaynor

Close(d) Up isolates and physicalises two European national anthems. Continuous photos are taken of two separate nationals as they sing their national song. Limiting their lips to still frames breaks down the anthems along with their energy as they are woven between one another in an isolated/connected European portrait. The mouth becomes the central point of the work, mimicking it’s role in the infectious, biological Covid-19 pandemic. Viewers experience the mouths uncovered as a relationship between biological contagion, and national projection. Although distanced by culture, borders and the frame of the camera, they form together and become a mosaic of Europe's contemporary identity.

Close(d) Up, 2020 The work was first exhibited virtually during the Covid-19 pandemic at "Narrating the New Normal", which was curated by Aideen Barry for the Birr Arts Festival.
